A hearty, smoky vegan black bean burger that holds together perfectly. High in plant protein, under 315 calories, and satisfying enough to convert meat-eaters.

Ingredients

  • 2 tins (400g each) black beans, drained and dried
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 60g breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp tomato purée
  • Salt and pepper
  • Wholegrain buns and toppings to serve

Method

    Mash black beans until mostly smooth with some texture.

    Mix in onion, garlic, spices, breadcrumbs, egg, and tomato purée.

    Season well. Form into 4 patties.

    Refrigerate 30 minutes to firm up.

    Pan-fry in a little oil for 4–5 minutes each side.

    Serve in buns with salad, tomato, and avocado.

Tip: Black beans provide around 8g of protein and 7g of fibre per 100g cooked — a nutritional powerhouse.
